How it started
The first box had to be won.
For the birthday of Zia Pin Balen, one of my best friends and my clothing business partner, I put two gifts on the table: a red watch he'd liked for a while, and a sealed mystery box. The deal was simple. Pick one as your gift. Want the other one? You'll have to win it.
He picked the red watch. The mystery box held Pokémon cards, a notepad, a pen, some chocolate and a vintage watch. I'd kept him guessing about that watch for a very long time.
Inside was a full guide to opening it: how I sourced every piece, everything that went wrong while I hunted down the vintage watch, how to open the Pokémon packs safely, which cards were the hits and what they were worth. The author on the cover was Humble Curiosity.
To win the box, he had five minutes and one tool: persuasion.
He won.
And it isn't over. Right now I'm planning the next one, a mystery box for my childhood best friend Alexio B's upcoming birthday.
That's still how every box here works: one real person, the right main gift, the story around it and a little bit of play. Humble Curiosity is now our Wildcard. Enchanting Expansion, our Wish-Granter, is a name I've used for years for my Wi-Fi and as a gamer tag.
